Family / Informal Carers

A family carer is someone providing a significant level of care regularly to a person in need of care in the home due to illness, disability or frailty.

The care that family and other carers provide involves looking after the needs of people with a wide range of dependencies across all age groups. The support from the carer helps the persons they are caring for remain at home, for as long as is safe and practical.

Carers may be eligible for a carer’s support grant provided yearly by the Department of Social Protection. Carers can find more information on the grant and who can apply on the Citizens Information website.

For information on the range of supports available to family carers please visit this page of the HSE website.
