€50,000 for research into the impact of housing conditions on Older People

The Housing Conditions for Older People Research Group has been successful in its application to the Meath Foundation (Tallaght University Hospital) for funding of €50,000 for research into the impact of housing conditions on Older People. The group is chaired by Housing Agency researcher Roslyn Molloy, who also collaborated on the submission for funding.

The aim of the research is to investigate the link between common housing conditions and hazards that affect older people’s health in South Dublin and their impact on Tallaght University Hospital’s healthcare delivery.

As part of this research there will be technical assessments and interviews with residents by Building Research Establishment (BRE) trained surveyors involving a representative range of older people and housing types in the South Dublin County Council area.

Formerly known as the BRE Sub-Group Housing Conditions for Older People, the group consists of BRE UK and Ireland, Age Friendly Ireland, TrinityHaus, National Disability Authority, Meath Local Authority, Age Action and The Housing Agency.

Additional collaborators to the group for this project are Colm Ward, Director of Housing and Social Supports, South Dublin County Council; Professor Desmond O’Neill and Professor Sean Kennelly, Centre for Ageing, Neuroscience and the Humanities, Tallaght University Hospital.

In February BRE Trust published a report on Housing Conditions in Ireland. The Housing Agency is referenced in the report, entitled ‘The Cost of Poor Housing in Ireland’: https://www.bretrust.org.uk/knowledgehub/the-cost-of-poor-housing-in-ireland/
